This Gaba oolong is grown and produced on a small scale in the high mountain region of Alishan in Taiwan, at an elevation of around 1500 metres. It is a little different to the classic gaba oolong in that it is creamier, fuller and more mellow than other gaba oolongs, with less obvious cinnamon notes. It is produced by an outstanding tea maker, who is meticulous in his farming practices and takes pride in the quality of his products. The high mountain environment in which this tea is grown is pristine. See our blog post on Taiwan Tea Travel for more information and photos.
What is ‘gaba oolong’? - Gaba oolong contains Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) - an amino acid which occurs naturally in the body. It is produced in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere rather than an oxygen atmosphere. Among a number of the health benefits it is thought to offer, it is said to have a calming effect on the nervous system. Dr Tsushida Tojiro from Japan's National Tea Experiment Station inadvertently stumbled across this taste sensation in the late 1980s while conducting research into the amino acid metabolism of tea.
