Recently we travelled to Japan and visited the Obubu tea gardens in Wazuka near Uji in Kyoto prefecture. Wazuka is a beautiful idyllic village, where tea and rice are grown.
We brought back a small amount of the Kabuse Sencha. This is sometimes referred to as a covered tea because the tea plants are shaded from the sun before harvesting. The finished tea is a mix of pale and bright green leaves - this is because the they stay tender and light in colour under the protection of the shade.
If you are in Japan and would like to visit Obubu just look them up and make the necessary arrangements. It is slightly off the beaten track by Japanese standards but definitely worth it.
